Johannesburg – A petrol tanker crashed on Saturday near a bridge along Kliprivier Drive north, near the N12 exit, Suideroord in the southern suburbs.

With memories still fresh of the Christmas Eve Boksburg LP gas tanker explosion that has so far left 37 people dead, authorities were quick to act.

Hazmat technicians were on the scene to contain the petrol spillage and Emergency Management Service was also on the scene for the extrication of the driver from the vehicle.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers have been deployed.

The JMPD said the N12 East has been closed off at Xavier Street.

“N12 West is closed off at Comaro Road. Kliprivier Drive is closed in both directions between the N12 West and N12 East exit,” the JMOD said.

“Motorists can divert off the N12 East onto Xavier Street and turn right into Rifle Range Road and off Comaro Road using Oak Avenue, Prairie Street and turn left into Rifle Range Road.

“Residents living within proximity of the accident scene are urged to be extremely cautious of the situation at hand.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the N12 in both directions travelling between Xavier Street and Comaro Road.”

The JMPD said the petrol tanker was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

“From the preliminary information received the tanker crashed and landed on the embankment next to the N12 East and the driver remains trapped inside the vehicle,” said the JMPD.

The tanker crash on Saturday was the second in as many days.

DANGEROUS: Daring people ignore the possible danger to scoop spilled fuel on Friday morning after a diesel tanker overturned in Wadeville, Germiston, in Ekurhuleni

On Friday morning, a diesel tanker overturned in Wadeville, Germiston, in Ekurhuleni.

The tanker which was headed for Alberton from Springs was carrying 30 000 litres of diesel at the time of the crash.

Members of the public ignored the possible danger and were seen scooping the diesel from the tarmac into containers before making off with the free fuel.

Fortunately, there were no reports of any casualties.
