Mbombela (Nelspruit) – Police have arrested the 33-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the Mbombela CBD.
People on the scene were left shocked and traumatised Wednesday morning when they witnessed the woman being shot dead.
After shooting the woman, the assailant jumped into his car and drove off.
However, police swooped on the suspect’s hideout at Louw’s Creek, outside Mbombela, where they arrested him Thursday night.
The suspect will appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he will face a charge of murder.
Speaking to The Bulrushes, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said preliminary investigations reveal that the attack on the 36-year-old woman was sparked by a domestic dispute.
Mdhluli said it is still unclear if the shooter was responsible for the deceased’s pregnancy.
He said the suspect was arrested after a team of police investigators was tasked by the Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela to search for the murder suspect.
“The suspect is facing a murder charge and more charges could possibly be added on against him during further investigation,” Mdhluli said.
“This includes information that the woman was expecting when she was killed.
“During the suspect’s arrest, police also recovered a pistol with ammunition.
“This will also form part of the investigation. At this stage, the exact motive for the killing is still unknown.”
