The South African Broadcasting Corporation has announced that the long-running music show LIVE Amp on SABC1 will be cancelled after the 25th season, which commenced on Friday, July 9th.
The once-trendsetting show, produced by Urban Brew Studios, saw its ratings plummet over the years, prompting SABC1 to cancel the show, which premiered in 2007 as just LIVE and launched the career of Bonang Matheba, who co-hosted the show alongside Andile Ncube at the time.
Minnie Dlamini, Sizwe Dhlomo, Pearl Thusi, Loot Love, DJ Warras, and Lerato Kganyago were among the later presenters, with DJ Speedsta and DJ Lamiez presently hosting LIVE AMP.
The final season of SABC’s LIVE AMP will be dubbed “The Last Dance” and will feature guest appearances as well as “reminiscent elements” that look back at some of the show’s most influential moments.
For more than a decade, the show has been synonymous with youth Friday night rituals, according to SABC programme manager Sane Zondi.
However, with Season 25 being the final season of LIVE AMP, viewers will have the opportunity to participate as “content contributors,” sharing some of their favourite memories.
“The series content plan has been designed to reflect and celebrate iconic moments and success achieved by the show in terms of talent development, socio-cultural contribution, creative innovation, and overall leading music TV show brand in Mzansi.”
“LIVE AMP will replay the greatest, most memorable, and original content moments for audiences alongside newly chosen music performances,” Zondi notes.
