Johannesburg – A 21-year-old student at a Sandton tertiary institution has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of jogger Kirsten Kluyts.
The local teacher had gone out for a morning run when she was later found raped and murdered in George Lea Park in Johannesburg.
In a terse statement attributed to Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the police on Sunday said: “The suspect, a 21-year-old student at a Sandton tertiary institution, was arrested at about 16:00 at students’ residence”.
“The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended Sandton’s Team of Detectives that managed to crack the murder case of Ms. Kirsten Kluyts by arresting her alleged murderer on Sunday 26 November 2023 in Parkmore suburb.”
Lieutenant General Mawela said the arrest follows a thorough investigation by detectives and the cooperation of 24/7 Security Management.
The statement said Kirsten was murdered on 29 October 2023, while she was jogging at George Lea Park in Parkmore.
“The suspect will be charged with murder and he will appear before court soon,” the statement said.
