Pretoria – Odi District Hospital in Mabopane, Gauteng, and three other primary healthcare facilities suffered damages to buildings during Tuesday’s overnight storm.
“Fortunately, no patient or staff members at these facilities were injured as a result of the damages caused by the storm,” the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) said on Wednesday.
“Albeit these circumstances, communities are advised that health services continue as normal.”
The GDoH said the extent of the damage at Odi includes a collapsed ceiling in one of the sections of the hospital and the roof, which has caused leakages in some wards.
Part of the hospital’s palisade fence has also been damaged due to the heavy storm.
The primary healthcare facilities include Sedilega Clinic in Mabopane, Block TT Clinic, and KT Mutubatse Clinic, both in Soshanguve.
“The extent of the damage at all these three facilities include damage to the roof and ceiling, which has resulted in the wards being waterlogged,” said the GDoH.
“As a result of the storm, the dysfunctional stormwater channels are also flooding the clinics.”
The GDoH said it has dispatched officials from the Infrastructure Unit in the department to assess the damage to institute immediate measures to ensure that health services do not get affected further.
“Due to the weather forecast predicting more heavy rains this afternoon, it is difficult to estimate timelines to refurbish the facilities,” said GDoH.
“However, the GDoH is committed to ensuring that contractors are deployed to these facilities from today (Wednesday) to commence with further damage assessments which will inform the scope of the refurbishments.”
