Durban – Internationally acclaimed playwright Mbongeni Ngema has died in a head-on collision.
Announcing his passing, the family of the renowned playwright, actor, choreographer, composer, and singer, said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, father, husband, and patriot, Mbongeni Ngema”.
Ngema was returning to KwaZulu-Natal from attending a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape when tragedy struck Wednesday evening.
The 68-year-old entertainer was a passenger in the ill-fated vehicle.
Ngema is best known for his award-winning works that include; Sarafina and Woza Albert.
Among his many hit songs is Stimela sa se Zola.
Ngema’s works reflected the spirit of resistance during the apartheid and liberation struggle.
“The Ngema family, colleagues, and friends are deeply devastated about Ngema’s passing,” the statement from the family said.
“The family will share further details about the funeral arrangements in due course.”
