Klerksdorp – The chief financial officer (CFO) of the Matlosana local municipality in North West and two others have been arrested in connection with R1.4 million vehicle fraud.

The accused 38-year-old Mercy Phetla CFO for the City of Matlosana, 39-year-old Matshepiso Mothelesane, and 49-year-old Nomthandazo Mokasule appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing charges of corruption.

Mothelesane and Mokasule are employees of GMHM Construction and Projects.

“The trio handed themselves to the Klerksdorp-based Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation this morning,” Hawks spokesperson in North West, Warrant Officer Amogelang Malwetse said Wednesday.

“It is alleged that in June 2023, a service provider purchased a Vehicle worth R1,4 million for the CFO of the City of Matlosana.”

The contractor reportedly bought a Volkswagen Amarok for the CFO.

Warrant Officer Malwetse said investigations by the Hawks Serious Corruption revealed that the service provider has a contract with the municipality.

The trio were each granted R35 000 bail and the case was postponed to March 1 for investigation.

They have all been ordered to hand their passports to the investigating officers and all documents relating to GMHM to be immediately removed from the CFO.
