Bushbuckridge – A 52-year-old man accused of raping his seven-year-old granddaughter has been remanded in custody by the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga.
The arrested suspect appeared in court on Monday (12 February 2024).
Allegations are that the child told her mother that she had been violated, allegedly by her grandfather.
The matter was then reported to the police.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the grandfather allegedly raped his granddaughter, on the Day of Goodwill last year, (26 December 2023).
“The girl also broke her silence after her mother had a conversation with her children regarding incidents of molestation, and emphasised that they should not keep quiet about such incidents but rather report it immediately,” said Colonel Mdhluli.
“It was during this period when the little girl came out of the closet and talked about her ordeal.”
He said the horrific crime took place in Bushbuckridge.
The accused, who can not be named to protect his granddaughter, was remanded in custody and his case will be back in court, next Monday, (19 February 2024).
The Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela welcomed the grandfather’s arrest.
“Adults should protect children who are the future. We trust in the wheels of justice and hope that justice will be served for the two victims,” said Lieutenant General Manamela.
