Johannesburg – Water woes in Johannesburg have worsened with the near emptying of the Parktown 2 Reservoir.

As a result, the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital was already facing water supply problems, authorities said late Monday, (16 September 2024).

“The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital has been greatly impacted by the water supply challenges at the Parktown 2 Reservoir,” Johannesburg Water said.

Technical teams were at the hospital trying to find solutions to boost the water supply.

“Currently, the Parktown 2 Reservoir is critically low to empty,” said a statement from Johannesburg Water, adding: “This is due to the combination of poor supply and high demand”.

Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.

Johannesburg Water said investigations into the supply and demand side of the system had not yet found the cause of “sudden poor supply and high demand”.

The water authority said: “The teams continue investigations into finding the cause for the poor supply and addressing airlocks.

“These investigations require considerable time.

“The reservoir has been reconfigured to boost incoming supply, and there is no estimated time of restoration at this stage.”

Improvements were, however, expected overnight.

Meanwhile, the Berea Reservoir levels have declined.

“Poor pressure may occur while supply is reconfigured to boost supply at Parktown 2 Reservoir.

“The entity is monitoring and making necessary adjustments to keep the system stable.”

Johannesburg Water said the Dunkeld Reservoir was critically low to empty.

“The inlet remains open, but the reservoir is affected by the capacity of Parktown 2 Reservoir. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone,” said the statement,

Johannesburg Water said it was closely monitoring all three reservoirs and making necessary adjustments to improve the situation.

“Alternative water supply will be arranged for affected customers as and when it becomes necessary.”
