Johannesburg – Orlando Pirates collect their second three points of the season with a three-goal thriller against Polokwane City FC at Orlando Stadium, further extending their home win streak to six games.
The game began on a low pace with Orlando Pirates enjoying most of the ball possession, with Polokwane City looking to catch them on a counterattack.
As a result of both teams lacking creativity in front of goal, the game went to halftime with zero shots on target.
Polokwane made one substitution during halftime with Ramabu making way for Raymond Daniels upfront, however, it was the Buccaneers who drew first blood from Monapule Saleng’s goals in the 55th minute.
As the game neared the end Orlando Pirates’ second-half substitute Karim Kimviudi unleashed a powerful shot that was spilled by the goalkeeper.
Ever alert 82nd-minute super sub Evidence Makgopa pounced on the rebound and scored Pirates’ second goal.
But it would not be the last time Polokwane City’s goal-minder Manuel Sapunga would collect the ball from his net.
Makgopa came back to hit the final nail into the coffin in the 91st minute.
The lanky striker latched onto a poor back pass and toe-poked it home.
The Heritage Day victory sees the Sea Robbers move to the summit of the table with six points, which will put them in level with Golden Arrows who won their previous two games against Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants.
Polokwane City remain in third place with six points.
