Marapyane – A 58-year-old caretaker was found dead with dog bite injuries at his workplace in Marapyane, near Mmametlhake, Mpumalanga.
Next to the dead man, a security guard found a pit bull.
Police said the body was found on Friday, (18 October 2024).
The dead man whose name has been withheld by the police until his next of kin have been notified of the tragedy, succumbed to the injuries while his employer was away.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the pit bull has been handed over to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Narrating events leading to the discovery of the body of the caretaker, Colonel Mdhluli said: “According to information, the victim resided in his employer’s yard and worked as a caretaker of the pit bulls.
“It is reported that the pitbull dogs were often locked up and only released between 01:00 and 04:30, to conduct some patrols in the premises,” said Colonel Mdhluli.
Suggestions were that the man went out on Thursday, (17 October 2024) and was attacked by the dog when he returned the next day.
“The victim was discovered by a security guard lying motionless on the ground with multiple injuries as well as a pit bull dog, found next to the victim,” Colonel Mdhluli said.
“The employer was notified and reported the matter to the authorities.
“Upon arrival at the scene, they found him motionless, lying on the ground with some visible injuries on his body.
“He was unfortunately certified dead by the medical personnel.”
Colonel Mdhluli said police were investigating the matter and an inquest case had been opened.
