Johannesburg – Dirty laundry is piling up at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital because the washing machines have broken down, reveals Jack Bloom MPL and Democratic Alliance Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health.
“Patients at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital are suffering from a linen shortage as the in-house laundry machines have been broken for a month,” Bloom said in a statement issued Wednesday, (13 November 2024).
“Some operations have been cancelled as unwashed laundry piles up at the hospital laundry.”
Bloom said the provincial Dunswart laundry was doing some of the linen laundry, but it was inadequate.
As a result, there are delays in getting enough clean linen.
Bloom said conditions in the wards were deteriorating as beds did not have clean linen, pushing up the risk of infection.
