Belfast – Seven people – including a two-year-old baby – died in a New Year’s Eve N4 horror collision involving two vehicles.

The deadly crash occurred Tuesday afternoon, at about 14:00, (31 December 2024), in Wonderfontein, near Belfast, in Mpumalanga.

Five of the deceased were occupants of one of the cars and the other two dead persons were travelling in the other vehicle.

Both drivers died on the spot.

However, authorities withheld the identities of the deceased saying they first needed to trace and inform their next of kin.

One person who survived the crash with serious injuries was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison Spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said: “Earlier indications were that one of the vehicles seemingly lost control, veered off the road, and collided with the other sedan that was travelling in the opposite direction”.

Community Safety, Security, and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie urged motorists to drive cautiously.

MEC Macie also conveyed sympathies to bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“The investigation into the crash is already underway, however, reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage,” Mmusi said.
