Mr and Mrs Van der Byl on their wedding day

Durban – There was a huge dose of joy in the City of eThekwini at the weekend when the families of Jarelle Van der Byl and his better half, Chelsea Mudzinganyama, were joined as one in celebration of the newlyweds.

High school sweethearts Jarelle and Chelsea tied the knot on Saturday, (29 March 2025), at the Musgrave Methodist Church, witnessed by family, friends, and workmates.

With blessings and support oozing from both families, there were pleasant surprises for Jerrelle and Chelsea.

The first surprise of the day was the vintage Rolls-Royce that the couple rode in to the wedding ceremony, setting the tone for what was to come.

“The ceremony itself was more than we could have hoped for Chelsea would later remark.

“Surrounded by our loved ones, Methodist Church Minister David spoke with such grace and warmth, making the moment truly heartfelt and meaningful.

“It exceeded every expectation we had, and it was a moment that will stay with us forever.”

After the church ceremony, the couple made their way to the reception in a stunning 1934 Dodge, a dream come true for both of us.

The evening was flawless — the decor, the food, the music — all perfectly curated to create an unforgettable experience.

The wedding reception at the Transhaven Seaside Haven was an interesting celebration of diversity and an appreciation of how love can overcome differences.

“We danced the night away, surrounded by family and friends who made it all the more special,” Jerrelle recalled with a twinkle in his eyes.

FATHER OF THE BRIDE: Sam Mudzinganyama’s speech

Named after the famous English football club, Chelsea was warmly welcomed at the reception by her in-laws – the Van der Byls, who are ardent Liverpool fans.

“Chelsea is now a Liverpool fan,” declared Sam Van der Byl the father of the groom.

Jerrelle thanked his bride for making him a better version of himself, so much so that he could stand in front of the guests and speak confidently.

He also paid tribute to both families, making mention of the Sadza that his mother-in-law, Georgina Mudzinganyama, had fed him during his many visits.

She revealed that as a mother, she knew it was not just the Sadza and study that drew Jarelle to her home for more than a decade.

Anyway, all that ended well was more than appreciated as evidenced by the joy of the guests, some of whom travelled over borders, to attend the wedding.

Days after the big day, Chelsea shared how the road leading up to the wedding was filled with a whirlwind of mixed emotions – moments of tension, disagreements, and a fair share of stress.

Always level-headed, Chelsea quipped: “Isn’t that part of the journey?”

She added: “As the big day finally arrived, we found ourselves pleasantly surprised by the beauty and joy that unfolded.”

Chelsea said, looking back, all the bickering and stress leading up to the wedding seemed so insignificant when compared to how well everything turned out.

“We are deeply grateful to our parents for everything they did to make this day a reality. And to our friends and family – your presence and love meant the world to us,” the couple told The Bulrushes in an exclusive interview.

“It was truly a day and a night to remember, filled with love, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.”
