Durban – An altercation between a man and a Metro police officer at the Durban Beachfront turned violent and ended in tragedy after both men died in a shooting incident in the early hours of Saturday morning.
ALS Paramedics Spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said at about 02:30, the medical service was alerted about a shooting incident near the Public Pools, close to Blue Lagoon, on the Durban Beachfront.
He said ALS Paramedics responded.
“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find SAPS [SA Police Service] and Metro Police already in attendance, and were immediately shown to where two men were found,” Jamieson said.
“A quick assessment was done, and both men were found to have multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies.
“One Male believed to be in his 30s showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on the scene.”
The ALS Paramedics spokesperson said a second male, believed to be a Metro Police officer, also in his 30s, was found in a critical condition.
“Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to resuscitate the man on scene before rushing him through to a nearby hospital,” Jamieson said.
“Unfortunately, a short while after arriving at the hospital, the patient went into a state of cardiac arrest, and despite all attempts to save the man, he was declared deceased.
“At this stage, the exact events leading up to the shooting are unknown; however, SAPS and Metro Police were in attendance and will be investigating further.”
