Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has warned residents of possible low pressure and dry taps after heavy rains resulted in the temporary closure of the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant.
In a notice to residents, the City of Tshwane on Sunday, 16 November 2025, said: “Please note that the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant is currently offline due to extremely poor raw water quality following the recent heavy rains.
“Turbidity levels in the raw water are very high, which has negatively affected the treatment processes and makes it unsafe to continue normal treatment operations at this stage.
“In addition to the raw water quality challenges, the raw water pump is currently being stripped and attended to, as communicated previously.
The City of Tshwane explained that this work was necessary to ensure that once raw water quality has stabilised, the plant is able to resume abstraction and treatment reliably and safely.
“Our technical teams are on site and are working to conclude these mechanical interventions as soon as conditions allow,” the notice said.
“While the plant remains offline, the available storage in the Bronkhorstspruit/Zithobeni and Ekandustria reservoirs will continue to be carefully managed.
“Residents may, however, experience low water pressure and eventually no water in some areas if consumption remains high and storage levels drop faster than anticipated.”
The City of Tshwane said the pace of recovery will depend both on improvement in raw water quality following the rains and the completion of the work on the raw water pump.
“We understand the inconvenience that these interruptions cause and sincerely apologise for the disruption to the normal water supply,” the notice said.
“We appeal to residents to use the available water sparingly, avoid unnecessary consumption, and report any visible leaks so that losses can be minimised.
“We will provide further updates as the situation progresses, and wish to assure the community that restoring a stable and safe water supply remains our highest priority.”
