On Tuesday South Africa recorded 80 Covid-19 related deaths.
The Health Minister Dr. Zwelini Mkhize said the highest number of deaths were in the Free State 22 and Gauteng 32.
He said the total number of Covid-19 deaths stood at 55 340.
“Free State and Gauteng Provinces have been back-capturing deaths over April and May as part of their auditing processes,” said Dr. Mkhize.
“We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased patients.
“The cumulative recoveries now stand at 1 527 968 representing a recovery rate of 94,4%.”
Meanwhile, South Africa has embarked on Phase Two of its vaccine rollout.
The health minister said under the completed Sisonke Programme 479 768 people were vaccinated with the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
Dr. Mkhize said in Phase Two to date some 39 371 vaccinations had been carried out with the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
