The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has reportedly accepted recommendations by former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke to postpone local government elections.
South Africa is in the throes of a third wave, driven by the Delta variant.
Initially, local government elections were scheduled to be held on 27 October 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country’s nine provinces.
However, in the interests of ensuring free and fair elections during Covid-19, Moseneke suggested delaying the polls to February next year.
The IEC said it would study Moseneke’s report and make an announcement..
However, sources say the IEC chief executive officer Sy Mamabolo let the cat out the bag on Friday morning during a special national political party liaison meeting. He reportedly said the polls would be delayed.
As reported earlier by The Bulrushes, the IEC has announced that it accepts the recommendations to postpone the elections.
Mamabolo said the next step for the unprecedented move is to approach the courts to formalise the recommendation.
