A City of Johannesburg Municipality employee, Skhumbuzo Manana, accused of selling fake Covid-19 certificates appeared at the Booysens Magistrates Court earlier on Monday and was released on R3 000 bail.

Manana, 28, faces charges of the Contravention of the Medicines and Related Activities Act, fraud, uttering and possession of suspected stolen goods.

His arrest at the weekend stems from a complaint laid with Group Forensic and Investigation Services (GFIS) of the City of Johannesburg that Manana allegedly sold and issued Covid-19 negative certificates for an amount of R500.

Manana was arrested on 21 August 2021 outside his place of residence in Turffontein during a sting operation by members attached to the GFIS unit, working in close collaboration with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.

The case was postponed to 17 September 2021 for further investigations.
