With new Covid-19 cases doubling overnight in South Africa, top radio host Bongani Bingwa on Friday told 702 listeners that he was broadcasting from home because he tested positive for the virus.

Bingwa, who is in isolation, said the symptoms so far were mild and he only had a “blocked nose”.

The popular breakfast radio host said, fortunately, he had his jab, which he said “works”.

Bingwa was tested on Wednesday.

On Thursday, scientists in South Africa announced that they had detected a new variant B.1.1.529, which is feared to be more transmissible.

On Friday new cases were recorded 2 465 in South Africa. Sadly, there were 14 deaths from the virus.
