BRING BACK MARAWA: Protesters outside the SABC office in Auckland Park demanding that fired sportscaster Robert Marawa be reinstated
SHARE

A group of protestors braved the rain and converged on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) offices in Aukland Park on Saturday afternoon, where they demanded the reinstatement of sacked sports broadcaster Robert Marawa.

Some of the protesters said they travelled from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg to demand the return of the popular Marawa, who was fired by SABC at the end of July.

At the time the SABC said: “Robert Marawa departs following the conclusion of the MSW [Marawa Sport Worldwide], which Marawa presented both on METRO FM and Radio 2000 simultaneously”.

Marawa later publicly stated that he did not believe the decision to can his show came from “internal”.

He said the decision was taken by someone outside the SABC.

Four months after Marawa was let go by the public broadcaster, sports fans are flooding social media with calls for him to be reinstated.

On Saturday protesters braved the rain for about an hour. Some held placards calling for Marawa’s return, others sang and danced to songs by the late reggae legend Lucky Dube.

A man who addressed the crowd said as “soccer lovers” they were aggrieved by the manner Marawa was treated.

He said they had been “quiet” for too long and would now embark on exposing the SABC and its alleged shenanigans regarding Marawa’s sacking.

No one came out of the SABC offices and the protesters eventually dispersed. Marawa did not attend the protest.
