MULTIPLE VEHICLE CRASH: ALS Paramedics Medical Services on the scene

A three-year-old child died Tuesday afternoon in a multiple-vehicle crash – involving a truck, bakkie, and a car – near the Marianhill Toll Plaza, Pinetown.

ALS Paramedics said initial reports from the crash scene along the N3 westbound, were that “two babies” were hurt and were in a critical condition.

It turned out that the injured children were three and seven years old.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services said the horrific crash occurred at about 13:00.

“A truck, a bakkie, and a light motor vehicle had collided on the roadway,” said ALS Paramedics Medical Services.

“Two children aged three and seven believed to be in the rear of the bakkie sustained critical injuries.

“Sadly, the little three-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries on the scene. May she rest in peace.”

The Netcare 911 Aero Medical Helicopter was activated to airlift the surviving child to a hospital.

Last week, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula cautioned drivers to be careful as he revealed that as many as 822 people had already lost their lives on South Africa’s roads during this festive season.

Since then the number has been climbing.
