A prison official who was caught red-handed trying to smuggle the illicit drug, Mandrax, into the St Albans Correctional facility in the Eastern Cape will spend New Year’s Day behind bars.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said the official bust on Thursday with “95 boss Mandrax tablets” was now behind bars awaiting a court appearance.
The arrested official will only be named after the court appearance.
“The conduct of DCS officials is premised on respect for the law, strive for the good of society, protect the vulnerable and to instill a sense of pride and honour among citizens,” said Acting National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale.
“Hence errant officials involved in the smuggling craft, and other offences, shall never be spared any mercy.”
Officials and inmates who flout DCS regulations face disciplinary processes in line with relevant sections of the Correctional Services Act, and offenders shall be criminally charged.
