GUTTED BY FIRE: Lotus substation, near Lenasia
SHARE

A substation near Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, has gone up in flames and left several suburbs without electricity including Zakariya Park, Vlakfontein, and Hospital Hills.

City Power on Friday said it was “working to determine the extent of the fire at Lotus Substation, near Lenasia,” which has also affected parts of Lenasia South.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said preliminary investigations suggest that the feeder board on one of the transformers caught fire around midnight.

“Emergency services managed to extinguish the fire early this morning,” said Mangena.

“The team will this morning embark on mop-up operations while investigating the cause of the fire.”

Environment Infrastructure Services Department MMC Michael Sun will visit the substation to see the extent of the damage and monitor the restoration plans.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the feeder board is completely burned down,” said Mangena.

He said further investigations will be carried out to determine the extent of the damage and to come up with a restoration plan which may include backfeeding the areas that are affected.

“We applogise for the inconvenience caused,” said Mangena.
