Johannesburg – Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi has expressed his condolences over the passing of one of the conjoined twins who underwent surgery to separate them at Mankweng Hospital in Limpopo.
Just over two weeks after the historic separation of the conjoined twins, who were born joined at the abdomen on 28 January 2026, one of them has passed away.
An incredible team led by Dr. Nyaweleni Tshifularo successfully undertook the complex surgery on 17 March 2026.
However, complications arose after the surgery, leading to the death of one of the twins.
Offering his sympathies on Friday, 3 April 2026, Minister Motsoaledi said he “would like to extend his deepest condolences to the family of Limpopo conjoined twins following the death of one of the twins who were recently separated through an intensive surgical procedure”.
Minister Motsoaledi also acknowledged the exceptional work of the multidisciplinary team at Mankweng Hospital, whose efforts demonstrated the strength and capability of the country’s public health system in performing highly specialised and complex surgical procedures.
The minister assured the bereaved family that the remaining twin will continue to receive the highest level of medical care, and the Department of Health will continue to monitor the child’s condition closely.
