One of the four men arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a bouncer at a tavern – Khehla Place – is an African National Congress (ANC) councillor in Nkangala Region, Mpumalanga.
Four suspects were allegedly fighting with the bouncers on Sunday morning at around 00:50 when one bouncer was stabbed several times with knives. He died on the spot.
Police arrested 46-year-old ANC Councillor Moses Jabu Mofomme, 21-year-old Eric Mahlangu, 37-year-old Kamogelo Victor Moulameli, and 37-year-old Sibusiso John Buda.
The murder accused appeared in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court earlier this week on Tuesday and have been remanded in custody until 24 January when they will have a bail hearing.
Reacting to the arrest of Councilllor Mofomme, the ANC in Nkangala Region on Wednesday said it “has noted with shock and dismay the charging and arrest of one of its councillors in Victor Khanye Local Municipality”.
The ANC said its public representatives were expected to uphold and display high moral and ethical standards in the society they lead.
“Given the fact that the ward councillor has been formally charged and his membership will be revoked and temporality suspended and disciplinary process activated,” said Sello Matshoga, ANC Nkangala region spokesperson.
