Sedika Lekhobo was last seen by her family on Saturday.
The next morning the 14-year-old Grade 9 schoolgirl from Vryburg Secondary School in the North West was found dead at the local cemetery.
Although the cause of the teenager’s death has not yet been determined, it was suspected she was a victim of a brutal attack.
On Monday North West MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemela conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families.
“Human Rights Day will not be the same again for the Lekhobo and Mereekae families,” said Matsemela.
“On behalf of the department l would like to convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved families of our learner who attended school at Vryburg Secondary School,” said Matsemela.
“The pandemic of Gender-Based Violence against Women and children is still rife amongst our communities.
“We wish police can find those behind this horrible death of this learner.”
The MEC, however, added: “The cause of her death is still being investigated by the local police.”
