Convicted drug trafficker 41-year-old Abuohi Kenneth Ukonu will spend the next seven years in prison.

Ukonu was caught with a stash of cocaine hidden in pencil cases when he arrived on a flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil, in October 2016.

Authorities at the OR Tambo International Airport intercepted and searched Ukonu’s luggage.

The authorites found 3.6 kilograms of cocaine wrapped in small plastic bags concealed in pencil cases.

Ukonu was arrested and subsequently released on bail.

This week, the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court sentenced the accused to seven years in prison for dealing drugs.

On Thursday, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Gauteng said it welcomed the hefty sentence.

Acting Provincial Head, Brigadier Wendy Mashwabane said: “Unity between stakeholders becomes very impactful for this type of outcome”.
