Three people – two of them are officials from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) – have been arrested for unlawfully dealing in ammunition.
The bullets that were being sold when the trio was bust belonged to the JMPD.
JMPD management on Saturday said they were “disturbed and disappointed following the arrest of two JMPD officials and one member of the public for theft and illegally dealing in departmental firearm ammunition”.
The trio were nabbed Friday, 8 April 2022, after the JMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit received a tipoff from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).
The DPCI had been conducting an ammunition operation and had earlier arrested a member of a shooting range in Randfontein.
“The ammunition operation led the police to a male, who pointed out a JMPD official whom he was in cahoots with,” said the department.
“The JMPD official further pointed out the second official who is the alleged supplier of the ammunition.
“The second JMPD official was apprehended near The Glen Mall in Oakdene.”
As many as 5 400 rounds of JMPD rifle ammunition were found in his possession.
“All three suspects were arrested and initially detained at Moffatview Police Station,” said the department.
“They were later transferred to Johannesburg Central SAPS and they will likely appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 April 2022.”
