Ermelo Driving licence issuing official Sello Jerry Thomo has been jailed for taking bribes on 50 occasions to fraudulently allow learners to pass their tests.

On Wednesday the 50-year-old was found guilty and sentenced by the Ermelo Magistrate Court for 50 counts of corruption and fraud.

The corruption accused was sentenced to nine years imprisonment – with three years suspended for five years.

Thomo was also slapped with an additional four-year sentence for fraud. Both sentences will run concurrently.

The accused was arrested by members of elite crime busters, the Hawks Mpumalanga Serious Corruption Investigation.

At the time, the accused was employed at Ermelo licencing office responsible for issuing learner and driving licenses.

“Investigation revealed that the accused person fraudulently issued learners and driving licences to people who were not tested,” explained Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi.

Licence holders testified in court that they paid money to get licenses without being tested.
