TAX PROBLEMS: Shakira has been ordered to stand trial in Spain for tax fraud involving 4.5 million euros
SHARE

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll – better known as Shakira – is in big trouble with the law in Spain, where a judge has approved the trial of the Colombian pop singer for tax fraud involving 4.5 million euros.

On Tuesday, the judge sided with prosecutors who say Shakira deliberately failed to pay taxes.

The 45-year-old singer faces up to eight years in jail if she is found guilty.

Shakira denies the six counts of tax fraud she faces and disputes that she owes the tax for the period 2012 to 2014.

Prosecutors will have to prove that the Grammy winner was actually resident in Spain and not visiting as her defence will claim.

The date for the trial has not yet been set.
