Johannesburg – Joburg Water on Sunday said the city’s “Water Commando system levels have worsened from critically low to empty”.
The water authority said: “Due to Rand Water’s uninterrupted load-shifting from Eikenhof to recover the Palmiet system, Johannesburg Water’s Commando system levels have worsened from critically low to empty”.
The worsening of the water crisis means that taps will run dry in several suburbs that get water from the Hursthill Reservoir zone, Joburg Water said.
The affected areas include:
. Montgomery Park
. Westbury
. Hursthill
. Greymont
. Coronationville
. Newlands
. Northcliff
. Newclare
. Auckland Park
. Albertville
. Melville
. Richmond
. Parkview
. Emmarentia and
. Greenside
Joburg Water said “reducing demand remains a key priority” in areas where water was still available.
“Helen Joseph Hospital and Raima Moosa Child and Mother Hospital have adequate water supplies,” Joburg Water said.
“Alternate water supply is being provided to affected other areas through stationary water tanks and mobile tankers.
“We request customers to report leaks and bursts in the areas which may impact on the recovery of the system.”
Joburg Water reminded residents to observe Stage 2 restrictions and use water sparingly and not to use hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, or clean driveways, but to use grey water instead.
An emergency meeting of head honchos responsible for water supplies to Johannesburg will be held Monday.
