Makhanda – Seven Zimbabwean nationals awaiting sentencing after they were on convicted on rhino poaching charges have escaped from the Grahamstown Correctional Facility, Eastern Cape.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said the suspects, who are considered dangerous, escaped Tuesday, (18 October 2022), “in the early hours”.

The DCS said it was working with the South African Police Services (SAPS) to find the escapees.

A manhunt has been launched, the DCS said.

“Investigations have been instituted and the circumstances relating to the escape will be confirmed in due course. The seven are Zimbabwean nationals charged for rhino poaching,” the DCS said.

The escapees include:
1. Nhamo Muyambo
2. Francis Chitiyo
3. Trymore Chauke
4. Luvuyo September
5. Abraham Moyane
6. Simba Masinga
7. Bennet Kwarrie

“DCS is appealing to the public to assist with any information that may lead to the re-arrest of the escapees,” the department said.

“They are considered dangerous and should not be confronted if spotted, information should be shared with the nearest Police Station.”

Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt after seven inmates escaped from the Grahamstown facility in Makhanda this morning. They are charged with rhino poaching. Singabakho Nxumalo elaborates.
