Mbombela [Nelspruit] – The Mpumalanga Department of Education on Thursday said Matric exams were “progressing very well” in the province.

“The 2022 National Senior Certificate Examination, which started in full scale on Monday, (31 October 2022), is progressing very well in Mpumalanga province,” the department said.

“There were no major challenges reported so far and the department is very much satisfied with how the examination is unfolding.”

The department said some 39 665 candidates will write Mathematics Paper 1 on Friday, (4 November 2022) from 09H00.

The department said it was encouraged by the increase in the numbers of candidates who took pure mathematics this time around.

“In 2020,  28 925 candidates wrote pure mathematics and  in 2021, 34 470 and this year there is a notable increase which  is much appreciated,” the department said.

“‘Be that as it may, the department wishes that the majority of learners could opt for this subject considering the impact it has in unlocking future economic spinoffs.”

To this end, the department said it had established the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science, and Technology Academy to facilitate a conscious effort to increase the number of learners in these subjects as well as the pass rate.

The academy also offers in-service training to teachers who are teaching these subjects in the Province.

The Department said it takes “this opportunity to extend best wishes to all candidates who will be writing mathematics on Friday”.
