Sharjah (UAE) – Renowned author Deepak Chopra has made a bold prediction about how technology is going to be so intertwined with the medical field in the near future.
Speaking during an exclusive interview before his talk, “Future of Wellbeing”, at the 41st Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) on Sunday night, Chopra said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will gradually transform how medicine is practiced.
He said he was optimistic about the future of well-being as it would be very personalised, predictable, and very precise.
Chopra, a pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation, said that the advances of AI will help a lot in dealing with most genetic diseases.
He is of the view that less than 5% of disease-related gene mutations were fully penetrant while the rest came from lifestyle or epigenetic modulation of genes and even for diseases that have their sources genetic mutation that can’t be prevented or is very predictable.
“New technologies are emerging, including things like gene editing, so you’ll be able to cut and paste genes where you cut and paste your email,” Chopra said.
“But I’m also now looking at our deeper understanding of what we call virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and the Metaverse can actually be used to bring about self-regulation, homeostasis, and healing in the body.
“So in about or within the next decade, I see pharmaceuticals being replaced by digiceuticals, VR, AR, and Metaverse. It’s going to be very exciting.”
Chopra is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, and serves as a senior scientist with Gallup Organization.
He is the author of more than 90 books translated into over 40 languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers.
For the last 30 years, Chopra has been at the forefront of the meditation revolution and his 92nd book, “Abundance”, provides an enlightening guide to success, fulfillment, wholeness, and plenty, offering practical advice on how to cultivate a sense of abundance in times of fear and insecurity.
TIME magazine has described him as “one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century.”
When Chopra speaks, one may even think he is narrating some science fiction, but technological advancements made over the last 30 years have completely changed the world.
“I’m creating what we call digital versions of human beings and digital versions of physicians,” Chopra said.
“So you will be able to teleport your avatar to the avatar of the doctor and they can have a conversation and then you can have digiceuticals sent to you directly, and it can stimulate the autonomic nervous system or your vagal nerve and bring about self-regulation and healing.
“It’s a completely different model.”
