Under mounting legal problems, Donald Trump on Tuesday announced he is running for president of the United States of America in 2024.
The 76-year-old businessman served as the 45th president of the U.S. from 2017 to 2021.
Trump filed his paperwork Tuesday to run for president in 2024 with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) before he announced his candidacy at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida.
Earlier this year in August the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago, a resort home in Palm Beach, and recovered classified documents that Trump took when he left the White House.
Although Trump denies any wrongdoing, the matter is being probed and could lead to the former president being charged with a criminal offence.
Trump faces other legal matters related to taxes and his alleged role in the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 after he made unfounded election fraud claims.
Against this background, Trump made his “special announcement” at Mar-a-Lago promising that “America’s comeback starts right now”.
Trump won his first race against Hillary Clinton in 2016 and lost to Joe Biden in 2020.
However, observers point to the just-ended primaries in which the predicted red wave was a flop warning the former TV personality could harm his fellow Republicans at the polls.
Democrats kept control of the Senate, but control of the House was likely to remain under the Republicans.
President Joe Biden has not ruled out running for a second term. He will be 82 in 2024.
