Johannesburg – Jailed Polish national Janusz Walu? – the man who killed anti-apartheid hero Chris Hani nearly three decades ago – has been stabbed just days before his release on parole.
In a terse communique on Tuesday, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said it can “confirm an unfortunate stabbing incident involving inmate Janusz Walu?”.
Last week, there was a massive public outcry, led by political parties, upset by the Constitutional Court’s order to release Walu? on parole “within 10 days” after serving about 25 years for the heinous crime.

“A detailed incident report is to be provided at a later stage, but what can be stated at this point is that inmate Walu? is stable and DCS healthcare officials are providing the necessary care,” said Singabakho Nxumalo, the DCS spokesperson.
“It is alleged that Walu? was stabbed by another inmate from the same housing unit.
“Stabbing and other forms of disturbances are offences not warranted in a correctional environment and this case will be investigated.”
