Johannesburg – Botswana authorities on Thursday issued a warrant of arrest for that country’s former president, Ian Khama, who is in self-imposed exile in South Africa.
The warrant of arrest for alleged illegal possession of firearms and other related offences was issued by the acting regional magistrate, Mareledi Dipate.
The warrant orders that Khama must be arrested on sight and brought before the Broadhurst Magistrate’s Court.
Khama, who is also accused of receiving stolen property, is the second accused in the matter.
The former Botswana president was charged earlier this year in April, but to date, he has never appeared in court alongside his co-accused.
Botswana authorities allege that Khama committed the offences on or about 3 March 2016.
The 69-year-old former president has been at loggerheads with his successor and former deputy, Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi since the latter left office in 2018.
Khama, a former military officer, accuses Masisi of election fraud, and intolerance.
