Germiston – At least 43 people were hurt Wednesday in a collision involving a bus, truck, and several cars during rush hour.

First responders said the multiple vehicle collision occurred at about 17:00 along the N12, near the Edenvale off-ramp.

Emer-G-Med said paramedics and emergency service vehicles responded to a mass casualty collision.

“On arrival on scene teams were met with absolute mayhem. A truck, a bus, and several light motor vehicles had collided, leaving 43 people with injuries ranging from minor to critical,” Emer-G-Med said.

“An on-scene triage area was established by incident commanders and with the assistance of the Netcare911 and Rocket aeromedical helicopters, multiple critically injured patients were airlifted to specialist facilities for the definitive care that they required.

“Several ambulances transported the injured to various nearby hospitals for further medical care.”

Apart from Emer-G-Med, Netcare 911 and other private and government services assessed at least 43 patients.

“Most had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, however four patients had sustained serious injuries,” said Netcare 911 Spokesperson Shawn Herbst

“The four critical patients were airlifted to hospital by helicopter air ambulance.

Herbst added: “The rest of the patients were treated on scene by advanced life support paramedics and once stabilised were transported by various ambulances to local hospitals.”

The SA Police Service and Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers were on the scene.
