Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is in mourning after the 18-year-old daughter of the party’s Regional Command Team member Portia Mokalapa was found murdered in their home in Daveyton at the weekend.
“We deeply mourn with the family of our regional leader Fighter Portia Mokalapa and we wish to send our heartfelt condolences,” the EFF said on Sunday.
The EFF in Gauteng said it was “deeply troubled by the gruesome and inhumane murder”.
Narrating events leading to the discovery of the body of Sonia Mokalapa Madume, the EFF said her mother left at home when she travelled to Limpopo on Thursday.
The EFF said Portia Mokalapa called her daughter on Saturday morning to check on her, but she couldn’t get hold of her.
“She sent people to check on the house on Friday only to find that there was no one inside the house, however, [there were] visible signs of breaking in,” the EFF said.
The party said when Portia returned home she noticed her daughter’s bed was not as it usually was. She lifted the covers and found the lifeless body of her beloved daughter.
“It is believed she was raped and strangled to death,” lamented the EFF, adding that the party remained deeply troubled by the war waged against women by men.
“Women live and breathe at the mercy of blood thirsty men,” said EFF.
“As if that’s not enough we are further subjected to an incompetent policing and justice system.”
The Red Berets said the scourge of rape and femicide has broken through the “fabric of our society where criminals do as they please because they know the South African Police Service is incapacitated” and has “no political will” to combat crime.
“We call on the police to treat this case with the urgency and sincerity it deserves,” said the EFF.
“That the investigation must not drag on for a long time as this will serve to worsen the situation.
“We also call on members of the community to assist with any information which may speed [up] the investigation.”
