Johannesburg – As widely expected, Tania Campbell has been removed as Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni through a vote of no confidence.
A total 126 councillors voted in favour of the motion, while 91 voted against it.
Commenting on Thursday’s development, the African National Congress (ANC) said, “it welcomes the removal of the Democratic Alliance mayor, Tania Campbell, through a motion of no confidence that was passed by the City of Ekurhuleni council today”.
The motion, which was supported by the majority of the Council, was sponsored by the ANC Caucus as a mechanism of rescuing the municipality from the maladministration and total collapse of the DA-led multiparty government.
“Since coming into office in November 2022, the DA-led multiparty government has done nothing but reverse some of the most important work that it inherited from the ANC-led coalition government that preceded it,” the ANC said.
It was the second time Campbell was removed as mayor. The first time she was removed she managed to be reelected to the position.
