The Wish On Florida – the restaurant where rapper AKA was shot dead – is to close permanently in less than a week.

AKA was fatally shot outside the popular restaurant late on a Friday, 10 February 2023.

The internationally acclaimed rapper, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was killed along with his close friend, the chef and entrepreneur Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.

Since the highly publicised shooting, the restaurant has not been doing well.

Director of the restaurant Philani Kweyama said on 10 April 2023 the Wish will be hosting the last supper.

“In light of the recent tragic event on our doorstep we have experienced a severe downturn in business which leaves the directors with no other choice but to close the business permanently as the brand equity of Wish On Florida has been deeply hindered,” said Kweyama.

Kweyama said the restaurant was certainly a wish come true for two black entrepreneurs.

The pair dedicated the last three years building a successful black-owned restaurant in the heart of Durban, winning the Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur Award at the Durban Tourism awards in 2022.

“We would like to thank the city of Durban for the tremendous support in the last three years – catering to you and the rest of the country has been an absolute joy and your support will forever be engraved on Wish On Florida’s legacy,” said Kweyama.

Kweyama also thanked their suppliers and staff, adding that it was not an easy decision to make.
