Gqeberha – Border Police officers, attached to the Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape, have seized 32 blocks of cocaine with an estimated street value of R12.8 million.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the drugs were found stashed in an “empty” cargo container a few days ago.
The container was due to transport fruit from South Africa to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
SAPS said an investigation was underway to determine the origin and destination of the drugs.
The Port of Ngqura is a deepwater port on the east coast (Indian Ocean) of South Africa, 20 km northeast of Gqeberha.
Through Operation Shanela, SAPS said it continues to conduct “high-density operations to remove more drugs off the streets of South Africa”.
Operation Shanela was launched on 8 May 2023.
SAPS said since the launch,1 686 suspects had been arrested for dealing in drugs in South Africa.
