Johannesburg – A huge crack has appeared along Bree Street in the Johannesburg central business district causing several vehicle crashes and at least one minibus taxi to overturn.
Suggestions were that there was an underground gas explosion. They were no reports of fatalities.
The Joint Operations Committee (JOC) of the City of Johannesburg said: “We are aware of an explosion on Bree Street in the Joburg CBD, possibly on the gas lines underground”.
The JOC added: “At this time we request the public to stay clear of the area to allow emergency services to attend to the scene.
“We will update as soon as more information is available.”
Meanwhile, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), said several roads had been closed.
“Areas have been cordoned off. Please avoid the area to allow emergency and other critical services,” said JRA.

The JRA said the closed-off streets include:
- Simon Street and Bree Street
- Harrison Street and Bree Street
- Loveday Street both sides
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said: “This explosion has caused serious damage to the City infrastructure and properties involved in the scene”.
The EFF added: “While the cause of this unfortunate incident is currently unknown, we urge all residents and motorists to exercise extreme caution and prioritise their safety by avoiding the affected areas.
“We are in contact with relevant authorities to gather more information about the incident and to ensure that necessary measures are taken to prevent any further harm.”
The EFF called on the police to investigate the cause of the massive cracks along Bree Street.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) called on the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mzi Khumalo, to launch an urgent investigation into the cause of the explosion.
“This explosion is life-threatening for the tens of thousands of workers, job seekers, and residents of the CBD,” said the DA.
“We urge the public not to go to the scene of the explosion until it has been declared safe.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and those who had their property damaged during this incident.”
Developing story…
