Pretoria – A Re Yeng bus services have been suspended after an incident of vandalism.
The City of Tshwane on Friday said it “would like to inform its commuters that all A Re Yeng buses are temporarily suspended with immediate effect”.
The City added: “The suspension follows an incident of vandalism on the A Re Yeng first bus this morning.
“The bus was pelted with stones along Lavender Road on its way to Wonderboom.
“The perpetrators smashed the windscreen on the driver’s side, luckily the driver did not sustain any injuries and there were no passengers on board.”
The City said, consequently, the bus operations have been suspended with immediate effect in the interest of the safety of commuters as well as the drivers.
The vandalism coincides with the ongoing South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) strike in Tshwane.
SAMWU members downed tools to press to wage hikes, but the cash-strapped City has declined the request and declared the strike illegal.
“Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) operations remain suspended,” the City said.
“The city would like to profusely apologise for the inconvenience caused and advise that commuters should arrange alternative means of transport.”
