London – The recent Global Hunger Index has once again highlighted Pakistans consistent struggle as the countrys hunger level is now considered to be serious.
The GHI report was conducted by the German non-profit Welthungerlife and the Irish organisation Concern Worldwide, which is a report that highlights hunger around the world and the struggle which was launched in Islamabad last week.
The report highlighted the impact of armed conflict, climate change, covid-19 and an economic crisis pushing inflation in the country, which has left millions vulnerable to severe food insecurity.
According to the GHI, projections show that Pakistan will fail to achieve low hunger by 2030.
Pakistan achieved a score of 26.1 for the 2022 report, worse than its 29.6 in the last edition of the report in 2014.
The United Nations predicted in a report titled ‘Hunger Hotspots: FAO-WFP Early Warnings on Severe Food Insecurity about the worsening situation in Pakistan.
Since it is still recovering from severe floods that caused massive damage to agriculture with a loss of around $40 billion.
Nonetheless, the floods were not the only setback for Pakistan.
The debt the country must pay is $77 billion according to the IMF.
As well as the political unrest and import and export situation which Pakistan heavily relies on with prices looming, has had an impact on food and energy supplies.
The Pakistani people simply cannot afford things anymore and the government must do something about this situation so that food can be affordable for people.
South Asia, the region with the worlds highest hunger level, has the highest child stunting rate and by far the highest child wasting rate of any world region.
Hunger is the real issue here.
Alarmingly, it is the women and children that are suffering the most and who will be the most vulnerable to future political and economic problems.
Unfortunately, challenges in Pakistan have aggravated major vulnerabilities faced by food-insecure communities which requires urgent action from policymakers to make changes in the country immediately.
