Johannesburg – Seven police officers from the Ekurhuleni infrastructure unit and Germiston Crime Intelligence appeared in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court for theft, corruption, malicious damage to property, and defeating the administration of justice.

The accused stationed at Nigel Police Station include 29-year-old Siyash Rampearie, 30-year-old Lloyd Bafana Nyamboso, 25-year-old Neo Ashley Maboya, 32-year-old Yingisa Wesley Mhlongo, 41-year-old Mhlaba Lungani Ngcobo, 29-year-old Nkoma Tervin Motupa and 38-year-old Motshusi Samuel Dipone.

Allegations are that on 15 July 2023, the seven SA Police Service (SAPS) members went to LM Café in Nigel, where they allegedly damaged property in the shop.

The accused allegedly broke into a safe and stole R172 400 in cash and 152 boxes of illicit cigarettes.

The SAPS officers opened a case against the owner of the shop but allegedly did not complete the SAP13 form that stipulates items the police confiscated.

However, on the same day of the incident, the shop owner also reported the matter to the police.

“After investigations by the Independent Police Investigations Directorate the seven SAPS officers handed themselves over to the police and are remanded in custody,” said National Prosecuting Authority Gauteng Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana

“The matter was postponed to 7 August 2023 for a formal bail application.

“The NPA intends to oppose bail in the matter.”
