Pretoria – Higher Education, Science, and Innovation Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande has extended the notice to the University of South Africa (UNISA) Council to place the struggling institution under administration.

The notice sent to the Council on 6 August 2023 provided it with seven days to make written representations.

Minister Nzimande issued a notice in terms of section 49B(1A) which requests that the Minister must, before making an appointment of an administrator on the grounds listed in section 49B(1) (a) or (b)- give written notice to the Council of the intention to make such an appointment; provide the Council with the reasons for the appointment; give the Council a reasonable opportunity to make written representations and consider the representations.

However, on Wednesday, Minister Nzimande said, “By mutual agreement, the parties agreed to extend the period for written representations to the 4th of September 2023”.

The minister said, while being mindful of the legal and administrative requirements, he will await the response of the Council and “will in due course make his final determination”.

Minister Nzimande said he remains determined to address all challenges at UNISA.

“UNISA is too big to fail,” reiterated the minister.
