Komatipoort – Counterfeit jeans and sneakers with an estimated street value of more than R1.5 million have been intercepted at the Lebombo border after customs authorities searched a truck from Mozambique.

The truck, in which the counterfeit goods were concealed, was impounded by the police.

Authorities searched the truck after the occupants alighted and “disappeared”.

The driver had apparently noticed the SA Revenue Service and police operation at the port of entry and decided to abandon the truck.

Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela praised the law enforcement team for the breakthrough in finding the fake goods.

“Day by day criminals try their luck by crippling the economy of the Republic,” Manamela said.

“However, thanks to the dedication displayed by the members.

“We, therefore, reassure the public that we will continue to clamp down on illicit operations.”
