UPDATED: 7:45

Johannesburg  – At least 47 people have died in a building fire in the Joburg central business district.

More than 40 others were injured in the fire.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday.

City of Joburg EMS Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said firefighters were attending to a building on fire in the CBD at the corner of Delvers, and Alberts Streets in Marshalltown.

Many residents have been evacuated from the five-storey building, but Mulaudzi warned the number of fatalities could rise.

A survivor from the fire at the Usindiso building, said: “The fire started from the bottom… going up”.

He said the building was in darkness when the fire started.

“There was no electricity,” he said.

At about 09:40, Mulaudzi said the fire had been completely extinguished and the EMS was conducting a search and rescue operation.
